Capital Modern Downtown Building Tour

  • City Hall Plaza Sir Winston Churchill Square Northwest Edmonton, AB, T5J 0R2 Canada (map)

The walking tour, co-led by architects Shafraaz Kaba and David Murray, will start at the 1992 City Hall and make 10 stops along a route through the downtown. We’ll talk about the designers of the buildings on our route, when the buildings were constructed and how they fit into a multi-style, diverse urban design landscape. There will be some reflections on what preceded the current set of buildings with some interactive discussion on how well the downtown has survived into the 21st century, how well it is being served by the numerous redevelopments and where it should be heading.

Hosted by: Edmonton Heritage Council

Tickets: $15

David Murray

David Murray is an architect in Edmonton who arrived in this city for the summer of 1968 and settled here in 1969 after graduating from the University of Toronto. He worked with architects Rule Wynn Forbes Lord, Douglas Cardinal, Peter Hemingway, R.L. Wilkin, Bittorf Holland Christian and Clark James Coupland before starting his own firm in January 1984. The practice has gradually evolved into conservation architecture with projects mainly in Alberta and the NWT. David was one of the curators of the 2007 Capital Modern Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Alberta. The 2024 walking tour is a continuation of the Capital Modern architectural exploration with many Modern buildings and projects in the downtown to talk about.
