Increase Performance with Biophilic Design - A CEU Session

Biophilia is a love of living things and of nature. Biophilic design incorporates elements of nature, connecting people to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions. It can mimic the sensory delight of a hike through the woods, or bring nature’s smells, sounds, colors and textures indoors.

Biophilia has historically been considered a ‘nice to have’ benefit, but evidence-based design is demonstrating benefits such as employee attraction, wellbeing, performance and retention.

IN THIS SESSION YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • A real life case of how Biophilic Design strategies produce significant ROI

  • The resources, tools and tips you can use to embrace this emerging field of design

Pasturing the RAM: When is a building truly at the end of its useful life?

Join DIALOG for a timely panel and provocative discussion on the future of the former Royal Alberta Museum Site. We will use this significant landmark as a catalyst for discussion about the end of a building's useful life. Who decides when that is, and how do we determine what the future of the site or building is? How should a building be dismantled in a way that considers its carbon footprint and the ecological impact of its extensive material inventory? How should any future use honor the past of the site while still considering its next iteration? Three experts will weigh in on this important dialogue, highlighting the nuanced considerations for the future that must be considered thoroughly when exploring a decision of this magnitude.

Discovering Wallbridge and Imrie Architects: Dr. Sarah Bonnemaison, Dalhousie University

  • Roundhouse, Allard Hall, MacEwan University (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

When Dr. Sarah Bonnemaison first heard about Jean Wallbridge and Marie Imrie, she was blown away by their incredible story. Here were two women architects, partners in work and life, who had a shared vision for what they wanted in the world. And despite all odds, they accomplished it. They were not interested in being famous or fashionable — they believed architecture should be comfortable, affordable, and delightful. In this talk, Sarah will share her extensive research on Wallbridge and Imrie and their remarkable lives and careers.

Dr. Sarah Bonnemaison is a professor of architecture at Dalhousie University. Her design practice specializes in tensile structures and festival architecture. Sarah is also a writer. Her books include Architecture and Nature and Installations by Architects as well as edited books and numerous book chapters such as “Queer Architecture?” Her passion lies on bringing history and theory to life through writing, exhibitions and video. She is currently writing a book about Jean Wallbridge and Mary Imrie.

This talk is part of programming for Mitchell Art Gallery exhibition, GLAD YOU CLOSER HOME / NEW WHITE WHISKER MARY by artists Cait McKinney and Hazel Meyer (September 20 - December 7), the Queer Horizons Speaker Series at the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) Speaker Series, MacEwan University, and Edmonton Design Week.

Play for all: Designing Dynamic Public Spaces - EDW Charette

In this hands-on, charrette-style event, we’ll explore, design, and create placemaking interventions through the lens of play. How can we transform public spaces into playful, dynamic, engaging, and active places for all ages? How can we make sure these places embrace and welcome everyone? How can placemaking interventions go from transformation, to activation, to eventually become destinations in their own right?

This charette invites designers and design enthusiasts of all levels to imagine what’s possible for a revitalized Michael Phair Park, envisioning how playful activations could inspire creativity, foster community connections, and help transform the park into a vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic destination for all ages. Architects from hcma will coach and inspire with their own notes from the field designing successful placemaking interventions like Alley Oop and Ackery’s Alley in Vancouver, and Confetti at Michael Phair Park.
